1. Overview
Advanced Enhancement is a radiograph display feature in Apteryx XVWeb, available as part of the Imaging+ suite. With a single button click, it improves the appearance of a dental radiograph directly in the viewer — producing a cleaner image with reduced background grain, better contrast, and sharper anatomical detail.
Your original radiograph is always preserved and never modified. Advanced Enhancement is a display-layer improvement only — the image your practice stores as the clinical record is never changed.
Practices on Imaging+ can request activation at no additional charge. See Section 8 for pricing and how to get started.
NOTE: Advanced Enhancement must be enabled for your practice before it becomes available. Contact your Planet DDS Account Manager to request activation. Once enabled, no setup is required at the workstation.
2. Problems This Feature Solves
Dental radiographs can sometimes display in ways that require extra effort before a clinician can comfortably review them:
- Flat, low-contrast images: Some sensor types produce images that appear washed out in the viewer, making it harder to see fine anatomical detail clearly.
- Background grain and visual noise: Sensor read noise can make images appear grainy, reducing clarity and potentially requiring manual adjustment.
- Time spent on manual adjustments: Clinicians may need to adjust window and level settings before interpreting an image. Advanced Enhancement eliminates this step for most images.
Advanced Enhancement addresses these issues with a single click — no manual adjustment required, and no change to your existing workflow.
3. Supported Image Types
Advanced Enhancement supports the following radiograph types:
| Image Type | Supported? | Notes |
| Periapical radiographs | Yes | Full support |
| Bitewing radiographs | Yes | Full support |
| Panoramic radiographs | No | Not supported in this release |
| CBCT / 3D imaging | No | Not in scope for this release |
| Pediatric patient images | No | Not included in the current release — contact Planet DDS Support for guidance |
The enhancement works across a wide range of sensor brands without any per-sensor configuration. If you see unexpected results with a specific sensor, contact Planet DDS Support.
4. What Advanced Enhancement Does
- Improves image clarity with one click: Clicking the Advanced Enhancement button processes the current radiograph and displays an improved version in the viewer — typically with less background grain, better contrast, and clearer anatomical detail.
- Works entirely in the viewer — your records are unchanged: The enhancement is a display-layer change only. Your original radiograph is never modified and remains the clinical source of record at all times.
- No new hardware or software required: Enhancement processing happens in the cloud. No new software installs, hardware upgrades, or browser changes are needed at your practice.
- Fails safely: If enhancement is temporarily unavailable, your original image displays normally. Clinical workflow is never interrupted.
- No impact on other tools: Because your original image is preserved, any other diagnostic or imaging tools your practice uses continue to work exactly as they do today.
5. What Advanced Enhancement Does Not Do
- Does not modify your original radiograph: The source image is never overwritten or altered. The enhanced view is display only.
- Does not apply automatically: Enhancement must be activated by clicking the button — images are not enhanced on load.
- Does not support panoramic, CBCT, or pediatric images: Only periapical and bitewing radiographs are supported in this release.
- Does not save an enhanced version as a separate file: The enhanced image is only shown in the viewer for the current session. It is not written back to the patient record.
- Does not replace your existing image controls: All existing manual enhancement and filter controls in XVWeb remain available and are unchanged.
6. Prerequisites
Before Advanced Enhancement can be used at your practice, the following must be in place:
| Requirement | Details |
| Imaging+ suite subscription | Advanced Enhancement is an Imaging+ feature. Practices not currently on Imaging+ will need a suite upgrade to access it. |
| Feature activation by Planet DDS | This feature is not available by default. Your Planet DDS Account Manager must enable it for your practice. |
| Supported image types | Only periapical and bitewing radiographs are supported. Panoramic, CBCT, and pediatric images are not currently compatible. |
7. How to Use Advanced Enhancement
Once Advanced Enhancement has been enabled for your practice, no additional setup is required. It works within your normal XVWeb workflow:
- Open a patient's radiograph series in XVWeb as you normally would. The Advanced Enhancement button will appear in the viewer toolbar.
- Select the periapical or bitewing image you want to improve.
- Click the Advanced Enhancement button. A loading indicator will appear briefly while the image is processed.
- The enhanced image will display automatically — typically with reduced background grain, improved contrast, and clearer detail.
- To return to the original image at any time, click the Advanced Enhancement button again to toggle it off. The original image is restored instantly.
- All your existing tools, annotations, and overlays continue to work as normal.
TIP: If the enhanced image does not appear after clicking, the enhancement service may be temporarily unavailable. Your original image will remain on screen — clinical workflow is not affected. Try again in a few minutes. If the issue persists, contact Planet DDS Support.
NOTE: Enhancement applies to one image at a time. Clicking the button for one image does not automatically enhance the rest of the series. Click the button for each image you want to improve.
8. Availability and Pricing
| Practice Type | Pricing | Notes |
| Denticon customers (XVWeb bundled) | Included — no additional charge | Contact your Account Manager to request activation. |
| Standalone Apteryx (XVWeb only) | $25 per site / per month | Contact your Account Manager to enable. |
| Practices not yet on Imaging+ | Imaging+ suite upgrade required | Contact your Account Manager to discuss upgrade options. |
NOTE: Advanced Enhancement is not activated automatically — even for eligible Imaging+ practices. Contact your Planet DDS Account Manager to have it turned on for your practice.
9. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will Advanced Enhancement change or overwrite my original radiograph?
No. Your original radiograph is never modified. Advanced Enhancement only changes how the image is displayed in the viewer — the file stored in your patient record remains exactly as captured.
Q: Which image types are supported?
Periapical and bitewing radiographs are currently supported. Panoramic and CBCT (3D) images are not supported in this release, and pediatric images are also excluded at this time.
Q: Does it work with our sensor brand?
Advanced Enhancement is designed to work across a wide range of sensor brands without any special configuration. If you notice unexpected results with a specific sensor, contact Planet DDS Support.
Q: How long does it take?
There is a brief processing delay after clicking the button — typically a few seconds. A loading indicator will appear in the viewer while the image is being processed.
Q: What happens if the enhancement is unavailable?
If the service is temporarily unavailable, your original image continues to display normally and clinical workflow is not interrupted. Try again in a few minutes. Contact Planet DDS Support if it remains unavailable after being enabled.
Q: Does it apply automatically to every image I open?
No. Enhancement is opt-in. You must click the Advanced Enhancement button for each image you want to enhance. Images are not processed automatically when opened.
Q: How do we get this turned on for our practice?
Contact your Planet DDS Account Manager to request activation. It cannot be enabled through XVWeb directly.
Q: How is this different from the existing Dynamic Enhance button?
The existing Dynamic Enhance button uses a standard image processing approach. Advanced Enhancement uses a more sophisticated processing method designed specifically for dental radiographs, producing cleaner, clearer results — particularly for reducing background grain and improving contrast.
Q: Can I go back to the original image after enhancing it?
Yes. Clicking the Advanced Enhancement button a second time toggles it off and restores your original image immediately.
Q: Will this affect other imaging or diagnostic tools we use?
No. Because your original radiograph is always preserved, any other tools your practice uses continue to work exactly as they do today.
Q: Do we need to install anything new?
No. Enhancement processing happens in the cloud. No new software, hardware, or browser changes are needed at your practice. Advanced Enhancement works in any environment where XVWeb already runs.
