When procedures are added to a claim, the treating provider that performed the first procedure added to the claim will be the treating provider whose information shows in box 53 of the claim form.
When an office takes x-rays (or any other procedures) under the house or billing provider, if the x-rays (or any other procedures) are the first procedures added to the claim, the billing provider's information will be entered in the "Treating Dentist" section of the claim. Sometimes this can cause problems with the claim being rejected if there is another provider who should actually be the treating dentist on the claim. Here's an example of that scenario:
To avoid this happening the office should be careful to make sure that x-rays (or any other procedures) are not the first procedures added to/posted from the appointment if their x-rays (or any other procedures) are recorded under a house or billing provider. Here is an example of the same treatment entered under the same providers as before, except this time the x-rays are not the first procedures added to the claim. Note the billing provider's information is no longer showing up under the treating provider section.
