Introduction & Issue description:
When a patient has a Space Maintainer (spacer) introduced to their Restorative Chart, it can be confusing to remove for some users. This guide will walk you through the process of creating a Procedure Code that removes the implanted spacer. The difficulty some may have is that spacers have a unique entry for their Procedure Code's Chart Category and Draw Chart As for the initial installation but share a code for removal with all other Dental implants.
Signs:
A spacer was entered and the office performed a procedure to remove the space but is unsure how to go about creating a code to remove the spacer. Visual Example: A spacer is entered on Tooth# 22 but there is not a code to remove the spacer.
Troubleshooting steps:
Setting up the procedure code to remove the spacer:
- Go to Setup>Procedure Codes>Procedure Codes.
- Click the button to add a new procedure code.
- Give the code a description indicating the removed spacer and when entering in the code, make sure to use the applicable ADA code. Ex. D1555 or D1556
- Set the code to bill to insurance (if necessary) and indicate it as a ledger code, so that it can be posted to the chart.
- Click into the tab that says "Charting". Set the fields to the following selections:
- Chart Category to "Spacer Maintainer",
- Tooth Area to "Not Applicable",
- Draw Chart As to "Removal of Implant",
- Required to "Requires Tooth#",
- Indicate that the code can be applied to all teeth,
- Materials (Check all that apply) to "Unknown",
- Default Material to "Unknown".
- Visual Example:
Applying the procedure code to the spacer:
- Navigate to the patient's Transaction > Transaction Entry page.
- Enter the D1XXX code that you created above and select the tooth where the spacer presently resides.
Next, navigate to the patient's Charting > Advanced Charting > Restorative Chart and check that the tooth with the spacer has been removed. There should no longer be a tooth or spacer in the chart.
