For advanced security issues, the insurance industry is transitioning to National Provider Identification (NPI) compliance. The full implementation date will be in 2008. Offices can request or be assigned a number prior to the implantation date; however, the numbers won't be required until that time. The NPI number will replace the license number for insurance submissions as it will uniquely identify the dentist or office group to the insurance company. There is no charge to get an NPI. Providers can apply online for their NPI, free of charge, by visiting https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov or by calling 1-800-465-3203 to request a paper application.
Once obtained, the NPI should be recorded in the provider’s setup. Click the word “Setup” and choose the “Providers” and “Provider Setup” options from the drop-down box. Select the appropriate provider, and click the Edit button. Input the NPI in the “NPI #” field. Click the Save button and confirm the change.
If the office chooses to send insurance claims electronically, the number should be supplied to Denticon for registration with the claims clearinghouse.
